OSHA Requirements for Medical Waste Containers

by Allen Peterson on 2007-11-08 09:49:59 - Email This

Hospitals & doctors offices are constantly dealing with possibly infectious materials that if not disposed of propoerly could infect others. Properly disposing of such items is essential to safe guarding the safety of others who may be in the presence of these items.

OSHA has mandated some basic rules when it comes to infectious waste disposal.  The rules state that regulated waste must be placed in containers which are:

  • Closable;
  • Constructed to contain all contents and prevent leakage of fluids during handling, storage, transport, or shipping.
  • Labeled or color-coded in accordance with the standard; and
  • Closed prior to removal to prevent spillage or protrusion of contents during handling, storage, transport, or shipping.
  • If outside contamination of the regulatedd waste container occurs, it must be placed in a second container meeting the above standards.

In addition to the OSHA rules, each state has its' own regulations for dealing with hazardous waste. Typically these rules are published by the state environmental agencies and/or state departments of health.

The Defender Series Medical Waste Containers comply with OSHA requirements and meet state guidelines as well.  View the entire Defender Series in our catalog under Medical Waste Containers.
